Arkan al-Hajj (Pillars of Hajj) & Wajibat al-Hajj (Obligations of Hajj)

While there is some variation among scholars and schools of thought regarding the exact pillars of Hajj, the following four are widely agreed upon:

  1. Ihram

  2. Tawaf (circumambulation of the Ka‘bah)

  3. Sa‘y (walking between Safa and Marwah)

  4. Standing at Arafat (Wuquf)

Important Note: Missing any of these pillars invalidates the Hajj, as they are essential components of the ritual.

When it comes to the obligatory acts (Wajibat) of Hajj, there is even more scholarly disagreement. Therefore, it is highly advisable for every pilgrim to learn about these matters in advance and seek clarity beforehand—rather than making a mistake and later having to ask how to fix it.

For instance, spending the night in Muzdalifah is viewed differently by scholars: some consider it a pillar, others a requirement, and some a Sunnah. To avoid confusion and possible error, it’s best to spend the night there whenever possible.

Despite the differing opinions, most scholars agree on the following as requirements (Wajibat) of Hajj:

  1. Entering into Ihram from the Meeqat

  2. Spending the night of Eid in Muzdalifah (exceptions apply to the sick, elderly, and their caregivers)

  3. Spending the nights of Tashreeq in Mina

  4. Stoning the Jamarat (Ramy al-Jamarat)

  5. Shaving or trimming the hair

Some scholars also include additional obligations, such as:
6. Remaining in Arafat until sunset
7. Tawaf al-Qudoom (Arrival Tawaf)
8. Tawaf al-Wada‘ (Farewell Tawaf)
9. Praying two Rak‘ahs after Tawaf
10. Reciting the Talbiyah
