Tawaf (Circumambulation) – A Pillar of Umrah

Tawaf, or circumambulation, is an essential pillar of Umrah and a profound act of worship in which Muslims turn their hearts and bodies toward Allah in humility, acknowledging their dependence on Him. This ritual involves walking around the Kaaba, the sacred House of Allah, as an expression of devotion and a means of drawing closer to the Almighty.

How to Perform Tawaf

1. Starting Point

   • Pilgrims begin Tawaf at the corner where the Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad) is located. On the upper floors, a green marker indicates this starting position.

   • Saying “Takbir” (Allahu Akbar) is recommended upon aligning with the Black Stone, though it is not mandatory to say it at an exact point. Pilgrims can recite it slightly before or after passing the stone.

2. Direction and Movement

   • Pilgrims should point toward the Black Stone while saying Takbir and then begin walking counterclockwise with the Kaaba on their left.

   • Kissing the Black Stone is a Sunnah but is only advisable for those who can do so without causing harm or congestion, especially during peak Hajj seasons.

3. During Tawaf

   • Pilgrims continue circumambulating while supplicating and engaging in heartfelt prayers.

   • Upon reaching the Yemeni Corner (Rukn al-Yamani), which comes just before the Black Stone, it is recommended to touch it if possible, though this may not always be feasible during crowded periods.

   • Each round ends at the Black Stone, where pilgrims point and recite Takbir again. This process is repeated until completing seven rounds.

Guidelines for a Smooth Tawaf

• Keep moving continuously to prevent congestion in the circumambulation area.

• Always follow the counterclockwise direction and do not reverse the flow.

• The Kaaba cloth (Kiswah) has “Allahu Akbar” inscribed above the Black Stone to indicate its location.

• On the upper floors, a green light serves as an alignment marker for the Black Stone.

• Those performing voluntary Tawaf should adhere to designated times and areas, prioritizing space for Hajj and Umrah pilgrims.

• To reduce crowding, avoid congested spots, enter and exit the Mataf (circumambulation area) properly, and perform prayers away from the main walking path.

By following these guidelines, pilgrims can ensure a safe and spiritually enriching experience while performing this sacred act of worship.
