10th Day of Dhul Hijjah: The Day of Sacrifice (Yawm an-Nahr)

When dawn breaks on this blessed day, it is Sunnah to pray the Fajr prayer. Afterwards, raise your hands toward the Qiblah and say:

“Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, La ilaha illa Allah, Allahu Akbar, wa Lillah al-Hamd.”

Then make heartfelt du‘a. After that, proceed—by walking or riding—to Mina for the stoning of Jamrat al-‘Aqabah.

On the Way to Mina

• Continue reciting the Talbiyah frequently.

• When passing through Wadi Muhassar, it is Sunnah to increase your pace.

• Upon reaching Jamrat al-‘Aqabah, you stop the Talbiyah and begin the next rituals of the day, known as the Major Day of Hajj (Yawm al-Hajj al-Akbar).

The Main Rituals of the 10th Day:

1. Stoning Jamrat al-‘Aqabah (رمي جمرة العقبة):

   • Throw seven pebbles, saying each time:
     “Bismillah, Allahu Akbar” (بسم الله والله أكبر).

   • The stoning is to be done from sunrise until dawn of the 11th, but the Sunnah time is between sunrise and noon. It is allowed to delay it until night, though it is discouraged without a valid reason.

   • When throwing, face the Jamrah with Mina on your right and Makkah on your left.

2. Animal Sacrifice (ذبح الهدي):

   • Obligatory for those performing Tamattu‘ or Qiran Hajj.

   • Many pilgrims delegate this to authorized agencies in Makkah.

   • If unable to offer a sacrifice, one must fast three days during Hajj (before Arafat) and seven at home.

4. Shaving or Trimming Hair (الحلق أو التقصير):

   • For men: Shaving the head is preferred.
     The Prophet ﷺ said: “May Allah have mercy on those who shave their heads.”
     The companions asked, “And those who trim?” He replied the same only on the fourth request.

   • For women: Trim about an inch of hair.

   🔹 After shaving or trimming, pilgrims exit from the partial state of Ihram (Tahalul Asghar). Everything becomes permissible except intimacy, which is only allowed after Tawaf al-Ifadah.

5. Tawaf al-Ifadah (طواف الإفاضة):

   • Return to Makkah and perform seven circuits around the Ka‘bah.

   • Pray two rak‘ahs of Tawaf, preferably behind Maqam Ibrahim. If crowded, any place in the Haram suffices.

     • 1st rak‘ah: Surah al-Fatihah + Surah al-Kafiroon

     • 2nd rak‘ah: Surah al-Fatihah + Surah al-Ikhlas

   • Drink plenty of Zamzam water and make du‘a:

     “O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, good sustenance, and healing from every disease.”

6. Du‘a at Al-Multazam (الدعاء عند الملتزم):

   • The area between the Ka‘bah door and the Black Stone.

   • A blessed place where du‘a is accepted. Supplicate humbly and sincerely.

7. Sa‘y between Safa and Marwah (السعي بين الصفا والمروة):

   • Begin at Safa:
     Recite the verse:
     “Indeed, Safa and Marwah are among the symbols of Allah…” (Surah al-Baqarah: 158)

   • Say:

     “Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, wa lillahil-hamd.”

   • Jog between the two green markers (men only) and make frequent du‘a such as:

     “Our Lord, give us good in this world and in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.”

   • Complete seven rounds, starting at Safa and ending at Marwah.

Important Notes:

• After completing Tawaf al-Ifadah and Sa‘y (if not done before), you may now fully exit from Ihram (Tahalul Akbar).

• You are now permitted to do everything that was prohibited in Ihram.

• You then return to Mina to spend the night and continue stoning the three Jamaraat over the next two or three days.
