The Three Types of Hajj

Hajj can be performed in one of three ways: Tamattu‘, Qiran, or Ifraad.

a) Tamattu‘ (تمتع)

This method involves performing ‘Umrah during the Hajj season, exiting the state of Ihram afterward, and then re-entering Ihram on the 8th of Dhul-Hijjah (Day of Tarwiyah) with the intention to perform Hajj.

Tamattu‘ is the most recommended form of Hajj, especially for those coming from outside Mecca. It was strongly encouraged by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

b) Qiran (قران)

Qiran refers to combining Hajj and ‘Umrah in one journey with a single Ihram. The pilgrim makes the intention to perform both at once and remains in Ihram until completing all the rites of Hajj.

Note: An animal sacrifice is required for both Tamattu‘ and Qiran.

This is supported by the verse in the Qur’an (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:196):

“…Whoever performs ‘Umrah during the Hajj months and then proceeds to Hajj must offer a sacrifice he can afford. If he cannot find one, then he should fast three days during Hajj and seven when he returns home—making ten in total…”

c) Ifraad (إفراد)

Ifraad means the pilgrim intends to perform Hajj only, without combining it with ‘Umrah. The pilgrim remains in Ihram from the start until the Day of Sacrifice.

No animal sacrifice is required for Ifraad.
